Cry Wolf (BenBella Books, 9781933771427) was reviewed in the Michigan Review, “the Journal of Campus Affairs at the University of Michigan. Since its inception in 1982, the paper has served as a voice of conservative, libertarian, and contrarian students at an otherwise liberal university.” The writer says, “After reading this book, one will seriously contemplate society’s stance on illegal immigration, racism, discrimination, freedom of speech, and political correctness. This short book exemplifies how easily pluralistic thought can quickly evolve into chaos and anarchy. Like many great books, this one proves to be thought provoking and conversation starting.”

The complete review follows:

“What if, instead of overthrowing the farmer as in Animal Farm, the livestock just worked the place after he died? That’s what happens on Green Pastures Farm, which then thrives by hewing to certain rules, the most important of which is NO TRESPASSING. But an injured doe shows up, and compassion trumps the rule; fortunately, she leaves upon recuperating. A raccoon proposes to pick the fruit the domestic critters can’t reach in return for a berth out of the wild. Since it quickly gets paw-sore, its family is admitted. Gradually, compassion, convenience, and eventually, cowardice open the gates to all wild animals, which then employ egalitarian democratic logic as well as violence to take over. Ultimately, they eat the hens, win the young dog and the young pig to their side, drive off many other original residents, and leave the cattle to face “Grandfather Bear” unaided. Lake writes vividly and characterizes shrewdly, producing an anti-immigration fable more polished than Orwell’s anti-Communist satire. Probably not more influential, though, for Lake lacks Orwell’s pre-Animal Farm renown.  —Ray Olson.”
